CHS Group now accepting donations for annual Shoe Box Appeal

Posted on 18 October 2021

CHS Group, a charitable housing association and social enterprise based in Cambridgeshire, has launched its 2021 Shoe Box Appeal to ensure all of the residents across its community support services have a gift under the tree this Christmas.

CHS Group provides a number of accommodation and support services in Ely, Wisbech and Cambridge, supporting people who would otherwise be homeless, young parents and their children, as well as people with autism, learning difficulties and those experiencing mental health issues.

The Shoe Box Appeal invites individuals, businesses and community groups to put together and donate shoe boxes filled with a range of Christmas gifts. This year, CHS Group is encouraging donations of gender-neutral presents, which are suitable for a range of individuals, to ensure gifts can be provided to as many residents as possible. Recommended items include: toiletries, clothing - particularly pyjamas, food items, stationery and gift cards for supermarkets or coffee shops. Personal notes or messages from contributors are also encouraged in the shoe boxes, however strictly no alcohol, tobacco or cash should be included.

CHS Group is accepting donations from now until Friday 10 December, which will give communities plenty of time to collect items for the appeal, while ensuring CHS Group’s staff members have time to check and distribute all shoe boxes.

For members of the community who would like to get involved but are unable to create a shoe box themselves, CHS has set up a JustGiving page for financial donations which will allow staff members to purchase additional gifts for residents.

Nigel Howlett, CHS Group’s Chief Executive, comments: “Each year our Shoe Box Appeal provides great joy and happiness to our residents, making them feel like the highly valued members of the greater Cambridgeshire community that they are. We were very grateful for the hundreds of donations we received in 2020; the generosity of the public provided some residents with their only present last Christmas.

For those for are unable to put together a shoe box, donations to the JustGiving page are equally as valuable as physical donations and no contribution is too small. Last Christmas, we used some of the funds raised to buy Christmas-themed pyjamas for residents at a couple of our services – this turned into a real bonding experience and is something we would love to replicate this year.”
